Curve #5

2012      Queensland Hoop Pine marine plywood, bicycle components     1.7m x 1m x 0.5m

These bespoke ridable sculptures perform as well as the best bicycles out there to ride, but far surpass normal bikes in their beauty and message.

They are made from sustainably grown Queensland Hoop Pine and are in essence captured carbon (carbon negative). As objects, they are emblematic of how we need to change our attitudes towards transport, consumer goods and the natural world. To ride, they are strong, stiff and light (the timber components are all hollow, and in the bike pictured weigh 3.2 kgs).

Beautiful to behold, lovely to touch, fantastic to ride and very long lasting, the concept with these is to produce made to measure ridable sculptures (or plycycles), that are representative of the future owner in some way, in any size, shape or style. These works/sculptures/plycycles are proof that engineered timber is every bit as strong and reliable as steel or carbon fibre when used in the right way
